Group Therapy

An 8-week group therapy session designed for tweens with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) typically involves structured, age-appropriate activities and discussions tailored to address the unique challenges faced by this age group. Here's a breakdown of what such a program might entail:

Weeks 1-2: Introduction and Awareness
(Week 1 Parents only) (Week 2 Parents & Child)

Objective: Building a supportive, trusting environment and enhancing self-awareness.

Activities:

  • Ice-breakers and introduction games to foster a sense of belonging.

  • Group discussions about individual experiences with ADHD.

  • Educational sessions about ADHD, its symptoms, and impacts.

  • Mindfulness exercises to increase self-awareness and focus.

 

Weeks 3-4: Skill Building

Objective: Developing coping strategies and social skills.

Activities:

  • Role-playing scenarios to practice social interactions.

  • Workshops on time management and organizational skills.

  • Exercises in identifying and managing triggers for ADHD symptoms.

  • Group activities that promote teamwork and communication.

 

Weeks 5-6: Emotional Regulation

Objective: Learning to manage emotions and impulses.

Activities:

  • Techniques for recognizing and expressing emotions healthily.

  • Activities focusing on impulse control, like delayed gratification games.

  • Group discussions on handling frustration and anger.

  • Relaxation and stress management practices like deep breathing and guided imagery.

 

Weeks 7-8: Integration and Empowerment

Objective: Reinforcing learned skills and preparing for the future.

Activities:

  • Reflective sessions on personal growth and achievements during the program.

  • Planning future goals and how to apply skills learned in daily life.

  • Parental involvement session to discuss progress and future support.

  • A closing ceremony to celebrate accomplishments and foster a sense of achievement.

Throughout the program, facilitators ensure a supportive, non-judgmental environment. Group sizes are typically kept small to allow for individual attention and to encourage participation from all members. The program also includes take-home materials and exercises to reinforce the skills learned during sessions. Regular feedback from participants is encouraged to tailor the program to meet their specific needs effectively.
